As quick as a lightning strike, Deuce Stanley finds herself in the hospital, slowly dying of a fatal, baffling blood disease. Convinced that a revolutionary government study will save her, her parents agree to send her off to Washington, D.C. to be placed under the care of a host of doctors and nurses, surrounded by sick children just like her.
But all is not well. For one thing, Deuce doesn't think she really is sick. For another...why do all of the children in the study carry such fear in their eyes?
When others begin dying, Deuce knows she has little time to escape before she herself is next.
